party in Orleans, this Friday

Please come to a farewell party for

Arthur & Laverne Bauman

Friday, April 2
2-5pm

at Left Bank Gallery
8 Cove Road, Orleans

Arthur Bauman is an artist, musician and friend. His mobiles have helped define our gallery on Commercial Street since the early '90s. (If we had a dollar for every time we heard someone describe our gallery as "the one with the mobiles," we'd have a nice pot of cash with which to bribe Arthur and Laverne to stay.)

Arthur is also a member of Oyez!, an ensemble of Cape musicians formed in 1997 to perform music of the Renaissance.

Arthur and Laverne will be moving across the country next month, where he will continue to make mobiles. We know their new community will soon realize what a treasure it's been given.

emergency broadcast - retiring artist!

There are some things you think will always be around.

Arthur Bauman's mobiles have been a signature of our Commercial Street gallery for years. When visitors talk about this location, they often refer to it as "the gallery with the mobiles." That's about to change. If you've been putting off picking out the one you'd like, the time is now!

Arthur recently told us he's retiring after many years of making mobiles - a career which follows an already full career in the Foreign Service.

We have mobiles in the Orleans gallery and in the Commercial Street, Wellfleet, gallery. There are also some smaller, table pieces available in Wellfleet. You can see them on the web, although it is by no means a complete representation of the hanging pieces. They are the dickens to photograph, so we haven't posted all of them.

If there's one you're interested in, please give us a call soon. When they're gone, they're gone!

We wish Arthur and his wife a very happy (and well-deserved) retirement.

Ellen Granter on "Flight"

Ellen Granter shared some thoughts with us about the work she's brought to our "Flight" exhibit (at Left Bank in Orleans through July 19). Here's are some biographical bits we thought you'd like:

"Although I have painted and created artwork since I was old enough to draw on my parent’s kitchen cupboards, my formal training was limited to a few drawing courses during college. I grew up in upstate New York and received a BA in Political Science and a MA in Chinese History from the University of Vermont. I studied Mandarin Chinese for seven years and lived in both Hong Kong and Beijing. I currently work part-time as a book designer for an educational textbook publisher, creating instructional design that helps children learn math, social studies, and science. Working from a tiny spare bedroom in my house near Boston, with one wall jammed full of art books and magazines, my artwork is now shown in numerous galleries across the Unites States and is present in many corporate collections. I am an avid birder, a slow hiker, an even slower runner, an obsessive sketcher, an intrepid traveller, a passionate environmentalist, and an aunt who enjoys spoiling her many nephews and nieces with elaborate pirate treasure hunt schemes."

Don't forget to visit our website to see more of Ellen's paintings

Sarah Graham

The San Francisco Chronicle had a great article on Sarah Graham on the front page of the style section last week.

By hosting several people at her studio while she made a new piece, she raised $6,800 for a non-profit organization which provides microcredit to women in Mexico and Guatemala.

See the complete article here. And see Sarah's jewelry here.
